The
Pousada Arraiolos
(official name
Nossa Sra.
Assunção) is a sixteenth century convent that has been restored to a perfect
blend between traditional and modern Portuguese architecture. The austere beauty
of the original convent - with its Manueline lines and Mudejar windows -
remains, but all bedrooms have been brought up to today's standards of comfort
and well-being.
The Pousada is situated in a valley
near Arraiolos, a city that is world-famous for its carpets. Wonderful
hand-made "tapetes" have been artistically woven here for centuries.
They are made in a rare (needlepoint-type) style, and are all
naturally dyed wool.
