The Pousada Guimaraes (official name Pousada Nossa Sra. da Oliveira) sits on a pretty medieval plaza in the very center of the old quarter of Guimarăes. This city is known as the birthplace of the Portuguese nation.

This charming hotel was once a private manor house, and has been tastefully redone to offer all the modern amenities. Each room looks pout onto the ancient, narrow streets and towers and steeples of the various monuments around the city- like the old castle, and the Palace of the Dukes.

The Pousada has been successfully adapted from a private manor house, and offers all the comfort of modern amenities, while maintains the charm and privacy characteristics.

The mediaeval town of Guimarăes has its origins in the 10th century. It was founded when a monastery was built on the site - and then a castle to defend it. The monastery acquired great importance and became a famous centre for pilgrimage attracting the faithful from all quarters.

Walls were later erected to surround and further defend the city that had grown up around the monastery. Those walls were demolished in modern times to allow the city to expand its streets and avenues - but the historic center was carefully conserved.
