Pousada Sagres sits in a superb position on
a cliff-top
overlooking the Sagres fort and the lighthouse of Cape St Vincent at the
most westerly corner of Europe (drive out to Cabo Sao Vincente
and you'll really feel the truth of this!). This is a windswept area
of great (if somewhat barren) natural beauty. There are several fine
beaches within easy drive of the Pousada.
Sagres has always been a
center for the study of navigation. A school was founded here by the
famous Prince Henry the Navigator in the early 15th century - even
Columbus studied here before his famous voyages. From here was
discovered Madeira and the Azores.
