Tavira Town:
Tavira is a typical town of the Algarve.
It began centuries past as a Phoenician village, then was
later inhabited by the Romans,
and then still later became an important city during the Moorish occupation.
This is a lovely town with an interesting old
Moorish quarter and castle. There are many interesting churches and
various historic buildings of fascinating architecture. It
is located by the Gilão River,
in the Ria Formosa (like an inlet with a close by offshore island.
The region is characterized by a higher than average number of sunny days - even
for the Algarve which is known for that.
